ISBN 0-612-12501-7 Can d··· a a • ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS During the course of researching this dissertation, l received help and support from many people, institutions, and friends. l was first introduced to the Bible moralisée many years ago by my former Professor of Art History at Strasbourg University, Louis Grodecki, whose student l was from 1961 to 1969; he opened my eyes to this unique monument of medieval manuscript illumination Otto von Simson's lecture given to the Friends of the Strasbourg Cathedral on the iconography of the sculptural program of the Cathedral's south transept revealed to me tne importance of the Song ofSolomon in medieval art and stimulated my int~rest in the Song. My interest in the Bible moralisée was settled definitely after my first visit to the Treasury of the Toledo Cathedral in 1967. At that time, and thanks to Louis Grodecki, l had the opportunity to meet the only two specialists then dealing with the Bible: Reiner Haussherr, then at Bonn University in Germany, and Robert Branner from Columbia University in New York. l was fortunate lU meet these two outstanding researchers at several European institutions with collections of medieval manuscripts. 1am thankful for the understanding and constant support of Professor George Galavaris, my supervisar, who strove to keeping me within the boundaries of my project while patir;ntly revising my ideas and my texts. My gratitude also goes to my three Latin professors from the Université de Montréal: Mr. Pierre Boglioni, Mr. Réal Brabant and Mr. André Longpré. With great patience and kindness they helped me to recover a good part of my knowledge of Latin, which had disappeared over the years. Professor Roger Reynolds from the Pontifical Institcte of Medieval Studies at the University of 2 • • Toronto drew my attention to the interrelationship between medieval texts and iconography. Mr. François Avril, Chief Curator of the Département des Manuscrits de la Bibliothèque Nationale 1:1 Paris, was always very generous and helpful; the Paris copy of the Bible moralisée was always accessible to me whenever 1needed to consult it. The same is truc for Dr. Otto Mazal, fOimer Director of the Department of IIluminated Manuscripts at the Oesterreichische Nationalbibliothek in Vienna, Austria. William Voelkle, Curator at the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York, was a very positive contact.
