PARIS Détail du lot 161 PRÉFACE FOREWORD « L’art, c’est le plus court chemin de l’homme à l’homme », écrivait André Malraux. Cet adage aurait pu être celui de la Fondation Guerrand-Hermès, créée dans le but de rapprocher les cultures et les hommes par ce que l’art a d’universel. La collection Guerrand-Hermès couvre les arts d’Orient depuis l’Antiquité, et dans sa majeure partie les civilisations de l’Islam, depuis le monde arabo-musulman de l’Andalousie jusqu’à l’Empire des Grands Moghols, depuis les temps des caliphes omeyyades et abbassides jusqu’aux siècles des Empires Safavides, Ottomans, Moghols et au-delà, jusqu’au 19ème siècle qajar. C’est un monde aimé par un Occidental qui s’ouvre à nous, un monde justement perçu dans ce qu’il a d’essentiel : – l’écriture, expression intemporelle de la parole divine, – la poterie et les arts du feu, productions éphémères de la terre. Un monde où l’image n’est que le reﬂet d’un au-delà imaginaire et où l’artisan privilégie un matériau naturel non pérenne à tout autre élément manufacturé. Ainsi, la collection Guerrand-Hermès s’articule principalement autour des deux pôles fondamentaux de l‘art islamique : – le manuscrit, sous forme de calligraphies ou de textes illustrés d’enluminures et miniatures, – la céramique, dans son inﬁnie variété de décors et de techniques, dont on ne connaît l’égal aux mêmes époques qu’en Extrême-Orient. Le nom d’Hermès, porté par le dieu à la coiffure ailée, évoque l’Antiquité… mais aussi le voyage… Il est un voyage auquel nous invite une miniature de la collection, le vol de nuit du Prophète vers Jérusalem, précédé des archanges Gabriel et Michel. Sans doute, cette miniature aura-t-elle inspiré la naissance de cette collection et illustre-t-elle au mieux la vocation de dialogue interreligieux promue par la Fondation Guerrand-Hermès pour la Paix. « Art is the shortest path from one man to another », said André Malraux. This saying could deﬁne the spirit of the Guerrand-Hermès Foundation, created with the aim of bringing cultures and people closer together through the universal nature of art. The Guerrand-Hermès collection covers the ancient times of the Near and Middle East and mostly the world of Islamic civilisations, from the lands of Andalusia to the Empire of the Great Mughals, from the time of the Umayyad and Abbasid Caliphates through to the years of the Ottoman, Safavid and Mughal Empires till the 19th century. Seen and admired by a western eye, the world displayed to us is perceived through the very essence and major ﬁelds of Islamic art : – writing – timeless expression of the divine word, – earthenware – ephemeral production of the earth. A world where the image reﬂects what lies beyond the imagination and where natural, transient material prevails over manufactured ones. Thus, the Guerrand-Hermès collection revolves around two essential and most favoured domains in the arts of Islam : – writing, manuscripts, calligraphies or texts illustrated with illuminations and miniatures, – pottery, displaying a wide variety of decors and techniques, of quality and inventiveness only matched in the past in the Far East. Hermès, the name of the winged god, divine messenger, evokes antiquity... and travel... a travel to which we are invited through a miniature from the collection showing the Miraj, the Night Journey of the Prophet to Jerusalem, preceded by the archangels Gabriel and Michael. This miniature could have inspired the creation of this collection and best illustrates the mission to promote inter-religious dialogue by the Guerrand-Hermès Foundation for Peace.
