Program Guide Homeowners of eligible single-family homes are invited to participate in Energy Efficiency Alberta’s Home Energy Plan. The first step is getting a pre-upgrade EnerGuide Home Energy Evaluation completed by an Energy Advisor who is participating in the program. Rebates will be available for work completed after October 16, 2018. To be eligible, your pre-upgrade Home Energy Evaluation must take place before the upgrade begins, including any demolition. Energy Efficiency Alberta is providing a $300 rebate that will be directly applied to the Energy Advisor’s invoice. Find a participating Energy Advisor at efficiencyalberta.ca/homeenergyplan Note: EnerGuide evaluations must be Version 15. GST will be charged on the full price of the evaluation before the $300 rebate is applied. Bonus Rebate To support those making significant energy improvements to their home, an additional $1,000 bonus is available to homeowners who complete three or more of the following measures within 18 months of the pre-upgrade Home Energy Evaluation. The bonus rebate applies to both the common and custom upgrades of the Home Energy Plan program that result in a minimum of 3GJ of energy savings each. No additional application will be required to receive the bonus—it will be generated automatically once the criteria is met through the submission of three eligible upgrades. All upgrades listed below are eligible if they result in a minimum of 3GJ of energy savings. • Air Sealing • Attic Insulation • Basement Wall Insulation • Exposed Floor Insulation • Main Wall Insulation • Heating System • Water Heating System • Windows • Drain Water Heat Recovery The home upgrades below are those most commonly recommended during an EnerGuide Home Energy Evaluation. Accessing rebates for these improvements are fast and easy—your contractor will apply on your behalf as soon as the upgrade is complete. Talk to your Energy Advisor about which of the following home improvements will benefit you most. Rebate Estimates for Common Upgrades Rebates are based on how much energy the above improvements save based on the starting and ending condition of the area of your home being upgraded. The more energy you save, the higher the rebate. The following examples provide minimum estimates of rebate amounts. Once you complete the pre-upgrade Home Energy Evaluation, you will receive rebate estimates specific to your home. The following are examples of eligible home improvements that may help you save energy and can be further discussed with your Energy Advisor to determine suitability for your home. All Custom Upgrades* require a post-upgrade Home Energy Evaluation once ALL desired improvements are complete. While we have attempted to capture most Custom Upgrades in the list above, most projects with verifiable energy savings that can be supported with proof of work and modeled by an Energy Advisor through the post-upgrade Home Energy Evaluation, will be rebated. On-site generation will not be rebated as it is not considered a reduction in energy consumption. Energy savings from lighting or appliance upgrades are also not eligible for rebate through this program. * Custom Upgrades refers to retrofit measures which can be modelled by an Energy Advisor as part of a post-upgrade Home Energy Evaluation and are completed by a contractor of the homeowner’s choice or by the homeowner themselves. A post-upgrade Home Energy Evaluation, at the expense of the homeowner, is required after Custom Upgrades are completed to calculate energy savings from upgrade and receive a rebate.. Custom Upgrades Rebate Calculation for Custom Upgrades Rebates are based on how much energy you save by completing upgrades at a rate of $62.50/GJ saved. Once you complete the pre-upgrade Home Energy Evaluation you will receive a home energy rating in GJ. Once you complete your Custom Upgrades and have the required post-upgrade Home Energy Evaluation, you will receive an updated energy rating. The difference in the energy consumption (less the considerations below) between the two energy evaluations represents the energy savings of the completed upgrades. Determining the eligible energy savings through Custom Upgrades would include the following considerations: • If any of the common upgrades were completed by a participating contractor and a rebate was already received separately, those rebate amounts will be deducted. • Credit will not be provided for energy generation through renewables. Please visit efficiencyalberta.ca/solar for more information on solar rebates. • The baseline energy use for home heating if a furnace is being replaced is 95% AFUE and 90% AFUE if a boiler is being replaced. This baseline will be used to calculate the energy savings improvement you have achieved in the home heating category. EXAMPLE SCENARIO The Smiths had a pre-upgrade Home Energy Evaluation which gave them an EnerGuide rating of 153GJ. They then decided to complete the following upgrades to improve their home’s energy efficiency: • Attic insulation upgrade completed and rebate application submitted by the Smith’s Participating Contractor. This upgrade saved 8GJ resulting in a $500 rebate cheque delivered eight weeks after insulation was installed. • Replaced their boiler with a combination boiler to provide water heating and space heating. • Sealed up all the air leaks the Energy Advisor pointed out during the evaluation (the Smiths did this work themselves). Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Projects Do-It-Yourself projects are considered a Custom Upgrade. A post-upgrade Home Energy Evaluation will be required at the cost of the homeowner to confirm energy savings and determine the rebate. The Smiths then called their Energy Advisor back to complete the post-upgrade Home Energy Evaluation. After the upgrades, their EnerGuide rating was now 112GJ – a savings of 41GJ! These upgrades and the post-upgrade Home Energy Evaluation will result in the following rebates: • $300 off the first pre-upgrade Home Energy Evaluation (applied directly to invoice) • $500 for the attic insulation uploads/Ingenierie_Lourd/ hep-programguide.pdf
